Today marks the fifth day of Navratri, a day dedicated to the worship of Maa Skandamata. Each day of Navratri offers us a new direction and inspiration, and today awakens within us the values of motherhood, compassion, and protection. The very name Skandamata describes her divine form—“Skanda” refers to Lord Kartikeya, and “Mata” means his mother. Maa Skandamata is the divine energy who gave birth to Lord Skanda and, by holding him in her lap, took the pledge to protect the universe. She is depicted as seated on a lotus, with young Lord Skanda in her lap. Her face radiates the softness of motherhood, and her eyes reflect boundless compassion.
The life and form of Maa Skandamata hold profound teachings for us. She symbolizes that motherhood is not limited only to giving birth, but also includes nurturing, protecting, and guiding. Her entire existence is a shining example of selfless sacrifice, compassion, and service. If we imbibe her qualities in our lives, we can maintain love and unity in our families, nurture harmony and cooperation in society, and elevate our nation to greater heights through morality and culture.
In today’s times, the message of Maa Skandamata becomes even more relevant. Just as she prepared her son, Lord Skanda, to fight against demons, we too must guide our children and youth onto the right path so that they may contribute to nation-building. Just as she protected the world through her compassion, we too must serve society selflessly and with dedication.
I believe that if we embrace the teachings of Maa Skandamata, not only will our families be filled with peace and happiness, but our society and nation will also move forward towards progress and prosperity. The festival of Navratri is not just a time for fasting and worship, but also an opportunity for self-reflection. On this day, as we bow at the feet of Maa Skandamata, let us pray for the strength to embody sacrifice, compassion, and selfless service, so that we may fulfill our duties and contribute to the well-being of society and the nation.
Jai Maa Skandamata!
