Today marks the birth anniversary of the great social reformer and Bharat Ratna awardee, Nanaji Deshmukh Ji — a name that gave a new direction to India’s rural life, society, and politics. On this day, I pay my heartfelt tribute to him. Nanaji Deshmukh’s life stands as a shining example of how a person’s dedication, service, and vision can influence an entire nation. From his childhood, he carried within him a strong spirit of service and devotion to the nation. Throughout his life, he viewed politics as a medium of service and made social reform his ultimate mission.
Nanaji Deshmukh was one of the key leaders of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. But when he realized that the nation needed social transformation more than political power, he stepped away from active politics and dedicated himself to Gramodaya — the holistic development of villages. He founded the Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya in Chitrakoot, which became India’s first rural university. From there, numerous initiatives in self-reliance, education, healthcare, and rural development were launched. He firmly believed that “India’s soul resides in its villages” and that the country cannot be truly strong until its villages become self-sufficient. He emphasized that true development is that which reaches the last person in society — an idea he called Antyodaya.
Nanaji’s life was a symbol of simplicity, discipline, and service. He proved that real social change doesn’t happen through words but through action. He always said that a person must rise above selfish interests and live for society. His life inspires us to understand that nation-building is the duty of every citizen, regardless of their field of work. He believed that education should not merely be about academics but about shaping individuals who are self-reliant and morally strong. His conviction was that if every person embraces honesty, hard work, and service in life, the nation will transform naturally.
Today, as we in Mira-Bhayandar write new stories of urban growth and development, Nanaji’s teachings can guide us forward. Just as he instilled values of cleanliness, education, self-reliance, and social harmony in rural India, we too must cultivate these virtues in our society. If we follow his path — work sincerely, dedicate time to community service, and extend support to the underprivileged — that would be the truest tribute to him.
Nanaji Deshmukh taught us that the true purpose of politics is not power, but service. This philosophy is even more relevant today when our public life demands transparency, ethics, and a commitment to the common good. He showed throughout his life that one does not need a position or authority to bring change — one’s actions and intent are enough.
On his birth anniversary today, I would like to say that Nanaji was not just a person — he was an idea, and that idea continues to live on. All we need to do is embody that idea in our deeds. Let us take a pledge to realize the India of his dreams — where service is the highest form of devotion, and every citizen finds inspiration, like Nanaji, to contribute selflessly to society.
My deepest respects and salutations to Bharat Ratna Nanaji Deshmukh Ji.
